The Engagement Appeal x Sabine Dembkowski: Better Brains and Better Boards

The meeting point of art and commerce is ever-changing and hard to define. What place does art have in the world of finance? How can young, savvy individuals learn to secure their footing in the world of work through smart investment? What advice do successful entrepreneurs have for the youth of today about finance, culture, and belief in the self? These are all questions ‘Art and the City’ seeks to answer, by interviewing some of the brightest and boldest minds in both the art world and the city.  

In this week’s episode, we interview Sabine Dembkowski, Managing Partner of Better Boards, whose mission is quite simply to facilitate better board evaluation. She has a PHD in Business and Management and over 20 years of experience in advisory positions. Better Boards also has their own podcast series, which you can check out for more insight to their work and the world of corporate governance (link below).  

“I like learning, I’ve always liked learning” admits Sabine early in the episode, when describing her entry into the city. She pursued a doctorate in the UK after being raised in Germany, and soon found herself working at strategy consulting firms. “I’m fond of bringing bright ideas into the real world”, she also admits, whilst explaining how early in her career she became excited about executive coaching, and wanted to move away from cookie cutter approaches, and become a real advisor for real people in the industry. She did her coach training and eventually left consulting to focus on leadership and advisory work.  

What’s one change she’d like to see in the city? Even more open-mindedness, willingness to learn, and the integration of different peoples. She elaborates that “boards are challenged like never before”, and that individuals now more than ever have to think outside the box to solve solutions. Her passion for seeing people with issues in the industry being able to change that still drives her in her work, as she continues to offer shining solutions and better board evaluation.
