Ms Millennial Money Reviews: Trading Game

Oct 3, 2024 | Insights, Investors, TEA Insights

Introduction

As I learn more about investing and build my confidence in managing my (still small!) portfolio, I come across various products created to support financial literacy and help newbies learn about investing.

So, as I encounter these products, I thought I’d share my views and whether I think they’re helpful or not. I hope this will help others navigate this world as well.

First up is Trading Game.

Trading Game is a trading simulator and education app. It combines real-time market analysis, quick and easy-to-read guides, games and more.

What is Trading Game?

Trading Game is an edu-tainment platform, offering educational content in a gamified and highly interactive manner. Market analysis and heavy trading and investment theory is delivered in bite-sized, visual and interactive ways, alongside a simulator to get you into the mind of a trader.

There are a few options available, the free version (which offers a good amount of functionality), Trading School Pro (£39.99 per year) and Trading Academy Pro (£99.99 per year).

Key Features

Market Simulator

Start with a virtual $10,000 and trade it in the markets, using real-time market data. You can use latest market insights and investment theory to inform your decisions and practice trading without risking your savings. For me, this is the best possible way to upskill, learn how the markets work and gain confidence in trading.

Daily Market Insights

Twice a day, Trading Game’s analysts publish a short and punchy market update, explaining how wider geopolitics or economic events are impacting the markets. This is delivered in clear and easily digestible language, along with helpful graphics. There’s even a poll at the end, asking users how they think the markets will react to the topic in question.

A great way to keep up to date and understand the interplay between the markets and wider events.

Interactive Games

As I mentioned, there’s a strong edu-tainment focus on Trading Game, with a number of games to put your knowledge into practice and compete against other users. These include a daily quiz, chart-reading games and the ability to compete against others in the trading simulator.

Learning through gamification is tried and tested, and they do it really well in this app.

Quick Reads

Famous (and long!) books teaching about investing, such as The Intelligent Investor and The Psychology of Money are offered in a condensed format, enabling readers to digest the key points and insights in around 20 minutes.

The takeaways from each chapter are summarised and visualised for quick and fun reading.

Trading Academy

On top of the comprehensive educational material on offer, there’s also the Trading Academy (available with subscriptions). This is a comprehensive 15-unit course on trading, covering the basics, through to more advanced topics like crypto and forex.

It’s a step-by-step approach to learning and testing yourself, meaning you can build your knowledge base at a pace that suits you.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Unpatronising yet accessible content
  • A safe environment to learn and make mistakes
  • Extensive learning resources
  • Community feel
  • Simple, user-friendly interface
  • Clear explanations of financial jargon
  • Ad-free experience, even in the free version

Cons

  • Pro version not necessary for casual users and the top subscription is expensive, at £99.99
  • Focuses more on short-term trading than long-term investing
  • May encourage a trading mindset over long-term wealth building

Conclusion

Trading Game offers a comprehensive, engaging approach to learning about financial markets and trading. Its combination of real-time simulations, gamified learning, and condensed educational material makes it a brilliant tool for anyone wanting to understand more about the markets, enhance their financial literacy and build investing confidence.

While it’s particularly suited for those interested in active trading, even long-term investors can benefit from its educational resources. The free version provides ample value, making it accessible to most users.

Overall, I think the Trading Game is a great addition to the world of financial literacy, and I would recommend trying it, even just to access the twice-daily market updates.
