The meeting point of art and commerce is ever-changing and hard to define. What place does art have in the world of finance? How can young, savvy individuals learn to secure their footing in the world of work through smart investment? What advice do successful entrepreneurs have for the youth of today about finance, culture, and belief in the self? These are all questions ‘Art and the City’ seeks to answer, by interviewing some of the brightest and boldest minds in both the art world and the city.

This week’s interview features Georgia Stewart, co-founder of Tumelo. She is a member of the Independent Governance Committee at Aviva, a former Cambridge Graduate, and was listed in Forbes’ 2023 30 Under 30 in Europe. As Tumelo’s CEO, she champions a pass-through voting technology that allows investors to vote on the proportion of assets they own in pooled funds. Therefore, her revolutionary work within the investor voting world has made her a huge force for good within the industry, and a name to know.

Georgia began her academic career with a degree in Natural Sciences at Cambridge University, where she learnt quickly about the powers of shareholder democracy when realising that because her school had made investments through fund managers, they did not have a say in how the companies they were investing in were being run. By working in advocacy alongside her studies, Georgia soon was able to champion issues such as climate change or CEO pay plans while also fighting for shareholder rights.

Georgia currently invests in an SRI and ESG-based portfolio, with a ‘set it and forget it’ mentality. However, she admits that she would love to be able to set up her own voting policy, so that she can have a say in how those companies are using that money. She also admits that it is difficult to find a fund manager who is perfectly aligned with your values.

At Tumelo, Georgia helps to tackle this issue by offering customized stewardship strategies, and helping to bring fund managers and investors together.
