Celebrating National Numeracy Day and How It Relates to Our Finances
By Tyler Hilgeman
On May 22, the UK celebrated National Numeracy Day. It’s a day dedicated to promoting numeracy in the life of children and adults alike.
While maths and numbers can seem esoteric in day-to-day life, they plays a critical role in financial literacy.
With a better understanding of how numbers work, comes a better understanding of how to manage our own finances, contributing to our overall financial health.
On that note, let’s take a deeper look at what National Numeracy Day celebrated and how it directly relates to our personal finances.
National Numeracy Day Events
National Numeracy is dedicated to helping individuals become more confident in their numeracy skills so that they can have a better and surer future backed by numbers.
The organization held an event that brought together educators, industry experts, and even finance influencers to talk more about the importance of numeracy in our lives.

Relating numeracy to personal finance and having such engaging and insightful ‘finfluencers’ discuss their approach to dealing with numbers is a brilliant way to demonstrate the value and importance of numeracy in our day-to-day lives.
They even have a challenge for anyone who is willing to brave the world of numbers, aimed at making everyone more confident in their numeracy abilities.
Businesses like KPMG (a business that offers tax, audit, and advisory services) also held their own celebrations in an effort to encourage greater numeracy rates in the nation.
How Numeracy Affects Your Personal Finances
Have you ever got to the end of the month, looked at your bank account, and wondered “Where did it all go?” It can be easy to go about life and not really care about what you spend your money on, as long as you have money to spend.
The problem with this mentality is that it often results in empty bank accounts and a large amount of credit card debt.
But what if there was a way to always know what you have to spend? In other words, you know exactly what you have to spend on food, rent, entertainment, etc.
This can only be done by making a budget that takes into account your income and expenses and making a budget requires a good understanding of numbers—numeracy.
Imagine a life where you are in complete control of your finances. There is no longer a wonder about what you have in the bank because you know exactly how much you have, how much you can spend, and what you will spend it on.
This is a life that can lead to financial well-being in the long term and relieve stress in the short term… and all it takes is a better understanding of how numbers work.
In other words, numeracy can shine a light on what used to be a dark space in your life by helping you better understand your finances and pave the way to future success.
Final Thoughts
National Numeracy Day may just be the “kick in the pants” that we all needed to start taking control of our own finances!
