Art and the City: Patrick Sarch of Hogan Lovells Talks Desk-Hopping and DJing
The meeting point of art and commerce is an ever-changing and chimeric point of interaction. What place does art have in the world of finance? How can young, savvy individuals learn to secure their footing in the world of work through smart investment? What advice do successful entrepreneurs have for the youth of today about finance, culture, and belief in the self? These are all questions ‘Art and the City’ seeks to answer, by interviewing some of the brightest and boldest minds in both the art world and the city.
The second episode of ‘Art and the City’ is an interview conducted by our multi-hyphenate Artist Ambassador, Emmeline (link), with Patrick Sarch, a senior partner at American-British law firm Hogan Lovells, where he looks over mergers and acquisitions, as well as corporate and finance practise. Patrick spent over 10 years at international law firm Clifford Chance before moving to the role of partner at White and Case, all on the back of an Honours degree in Banking and International Finance from City University Business School. In this episode, Emmeline speaks to Patrick about being a prominent figurehead in corporate law, and his occasional moonlighting as a DJ!
Patrick admits to having an unconventional path to law, leaving school with three Bs at A-level and having no set career plans. After a summer spent travelling and then interning on the trading floor, he soon decided that a structured, corporate job was within his interests. After navigating a slow start to the study of law as a result of the 1990 recessions, he finally graduated from his law course, keeping his DJ skills in tact all at the same time. When asked if there are any similarities between being a DJ and being a lawyer, Patrick replies that they both involve knowing your stuff, doing well under pressure, and a calmness of project management – keeping both metaphorical and literal plates spinning.
Whilst working at Hogan Lovells, Patrick has become a champion of contextual employment, and ESG advisory work. He explains that since COVID, a company-wide commitment to improving environmental, and social/sustainable governance has been crucial to his thinking. He notes that all business leaders must now contend with the inexorable drive toward more ESG responsibility, and plans to use his £10 symbolic investment to promote the female-led, circular fashion rental service Hurr.
